3 Highly Addictive Drugs: Prescription Meds, Heroin, and Cocaine
A drug addiction can wreak havoc on a person’s life. It can impact family, friends and finances. Some drugs are highly addictive even after one use. Some people have more compulsive personalities which may make them more susceptible to becoming addicted and fuel the addiction once they have tried the drug. It is not uncommon for someone who is addicted to drugs to also abuse alcohol. Here is information on three highly addictive drugs
Prescription medications
Prescription medications are now the most highly abused drug in the United States. More people die of overdoses from prescription medications than from cocaine and heroin together. According to Trust of America’s Health, the number of people dying from prescription pill overdoses quadrupled from 1999 to 2010. Painkiller pills are a category of prescription medications that are some of the most frequently abused. Some Hollywood stars including Keith Ledger and Anna Nicole Smith have died from overdoses due to a drug addiction to prescription drugs.
Heroin
Heroin is another highly addictive drug that is illegal to possess. It can be ingested several ways including sniffing, smoking or injecting intravenously. As a person’s addiction to heroin increases, they will require greater and greater doses to reach the same desired high. They will get to a point where they will not be able to function if they don’t use the drug and can have severe withdrawals if they don’t get it. TV star Cory Monteith died from an overdose of a combination of heroin and alcohol.
Cocaine
Cocaine, also called coke, is a powerful stimulant and very addictive drug. Taken in small quantities can give a person a feeling of euphoria. People using cocaine may seem energetic and talkative. Consuming cocaine can reduce a person’s need for food and sleep. Ingesting large quantities of cocaine can bring on unusual and violent behavior as well as paranoia.
Prescription medications, heroin and cocaine are all highly addictive drugs that can lead to drug addiction.
